Get the cake ready for its close-up by putting it in a well-lit, accessible area. To avoid collision with guest, make sure it’s on a sturdy table that’s far from the dance floor and major traffic-flow areas, like doorways, rest rooms, and the kitchen. About the table: it should be proportionate to the base of the cake. Find out your cake’s diameter (from your baker), and order a table that has 5 to 10 extra inches all around. Use linens that complement your overall color scheme and that drape to the floor. A little dram + a Lotta butter-cream = a guaranteed showstopper.

Please note that I do not play the game that many bakers play. When you ask, “How much will this cake cost?” they quote you a price that sounds eminently reasonable. What they “forget” to mention is that this is just the cost of the cake, and that everything else is “extra” i.e. delivery, set up, rental of plates, pillars, fountain, etc. By the time this is all tacked onto price of the cake, you wind up paying two or even three times the initial quote.
I think that’s outrageous. This may be standard industry practice, but I disapprove of it. I offer free delivery in Livingston County, free set up, use of all my equipment like pillars, plates, fountain, castle, to name a few. I do this to not only help you stay within your budget, but I want you to feel good about working with me, not like you’ve been sucked into a purchase from which there is no escape. I will sit down with you over cake and coffee/tea, find out exactly what you need, and then give you one all-inclusive price.
